Young female athletes & stress fracture
Could your period be the problem?
Young female athletes often experience irregular periods or amenorrhoea/no period in response to strenuous training. This is a well established fact that has been observed by sports doctors, athletes and their therapists for many years.
The problem with this is that the menstrual cycle plays an important role in bone density and general healing. It is a scientific fact that young females with amenorrhoea/no period and in fact post menopausal women are more likely to suffer from stress fractures and fractures as their bone density is reduced.
It is therefore extremely important that the menstrual cycle be regular.
Chinese medicine is very effective at regulating the menstrual cycle and improving bone density, reducing your risk of injury.
At leaps & bounds we typically use a combination of herbal medicine and acupuncture to restore the menstrual cycle however we recognise the importance of working with you to establish a healthy training schedule and often utilise the skills of a sports dietician to ensure you are getting the necessary nourishment from your diet.
