Urinary Tract Infections

Urinary tract infection (UTI) in adult women is a frequently occurring disorder.

Approximately 50% of women will at some point suffer from a UTI.

These acute infections generally respond quickly to antibiotics, acupuncture and perhaps dietary interventions such as cranberry juice.

Some women however experience chronic recurrent UTIs, which are painful and can have a significant impact upon the quality of their lives.

Many of these women are treated with long-term antibiotics, however, this can lead to bacteria developing a resistance to the antibiotics, which in recent years has resulted in health professionals seeking other treatments for recurrent UTIs.

A study published in 1996 by the University of Bergen in Norway found that 85% of women in their study who received acupuncture were free from UTI during a six month period as compared with 36% of the control group.

This study concluded that, “Acupuncture was highly effective in reducing the infection rate among women."
